Small business in Hawaii
Hawaii's small businesses are shaped by tourism and island life: tour and activity operators, vacation rental managers, restaurants and food trucks, plus contractors, solar installers and home services on every island. With no daylight saving time, Hawaii is two to six hours behind the mainland, so visitors often call before you open.
According to the SBA Office of Advocacy's 2025 profile of Hawaii, the sectors with the most small employers are repair and personal services such as auto repair, salons and dry cleaners, restaurants, cafés and lodging, professional services such as law, accounting, engineering and consulting, construction and the trades and health care, including medical, dental and therapy offices.
Where Ava helps Hawaii businesses
- Visitor calls from the mainland. Tour, activity and rental businesses get calls from mainland time zones early in the morning. Ava takes booking requests and emails them to you.
- Neighbor-island coverage. Businesses serving several islands can have Ava ask which island the caller is on and route details accordingly.
- Trades and solar. Contractors and installers can send calls to Ava while they're on a roof or between islands.

Recording calls in Hawaii
One-party consent. Hawaii Revised Statutes § 803-42 allows a party to a call, or someone with one party's consent, to record it, so phone calls follow a one-party rule. A separate law, § 711-1111, restricts recording inside a private place without consent of the people there; that matters for in-person recording, not ordinary phone calls.
Hawaii businesses often get calls from Alaska, California and Washington. Of those, California and Washington require all-party consent or have unsettled rules, which is one more reason to give a notice at the start.
Ava always says she's an AI. If your setup records calls, the script we draft adds a short recording notice to her greeting, and you approve the wording. Interstate calls can be tricky; see the state-by-state overview.
Time zones and after-hours coverage
Hawaii runs on Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time all year (no daylight saving time). We set Ava's business-hours and after-hours scripts to your local Hawaii time, so early-morning and late-night callers still reach someone.
