Small business in Maine
Maine's small businesses run on seasons: summer inns, restaurants and lobster-shack tourism along the coast, boatyards and marine trades, construction and home services booked for the short building season, and plowing, heating-oil and propane companies through long winters. Many are family-run with a small office staff.
According to the SBA Office of Advocacy's 2025 profile of Maine, the sectors with the most small employers are construction and the trades, retail shops, restaurants, cafés and lodging, repair and personal services such as auto repair, salons and dry cleaners and professional services such as law, accounting, engineering and consulting.
Where Ava helps Maine businesses
- Summer booking calls. Inns, rentals and tour operators along the coast can have Ava take reservation requests during the summer rush.
- Winter heat and plowing. Heating-oil, propane and plow businesses can have Ava sort urgent no-heat calls from routine delivery requests.
- Boatyards and marine trades. Spring launch and fall haul-out calls can go to Ava for scheduling requests.

I'll mark this urgent for the delivery team. What's the address, and is your tank showing empty?
Recording calls in Maine
One-party consent. 15 Maine Revised Statutes § 710 prohibits intercepting phone calls, but § 709 excludes recordings by the sender or receiver, or someone they authorize. Phone calls follow a one-party rule. A separate law restricts recording inside private places such as dressing rooms or bathrooms.
Maine businesses often get calls from New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont. Of those, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont require all-party consent or have unsettled rules, which is one more reason to give a notice at the start.
Ava always says she's an AI. If your setup records calls, the script we draft adds a short recording notice to her greeting, and you approve the wording. Interstate calls can be tricky; see the state-by-state overview.
Time zones and after-hours coverage
Maine runs on Eastern Time. We set Ava's business-hours and after-hours scripts to your local Maine time, so early-morning and late-night callers still reach someone.
